Sally Mugumira has been part of the St Magnus Hospital team since 2022, leading the Occupational Therapy department with dedication and expertise. Her passion for helping patients regain independence and improve their quality of life is at the heart of her work.
A Diverse Journey to Occupational Therapy
Sally’s career path is as inspiring as it is varied. Starting with a diploma in telecommunications, she later pursued a foundation degree and graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy from Northampton University.
Her experience spans a range of roles, including working with stroke patients in the community, dementia services, learning disabilities, physical therapy, and supporting young adults with mental health disorders. Each role added to her holistic approach to patient care. “I’ve always been driven to help individuals live safely and independently, tailoring support to their unique needs,” she explains.
A Day in the Life of an Occupational Therapist
As the department lead, Sally works closely with patients to address challenges that affect their daily lives.
“My job is amazing,” she says enthusiastically. “I help patients who face difficulties with everyday activities due to disability, illness, trauma, or ageing.”
Sally and her team focus on identifying patients’ strengths and challenges, using assistive devices and therapeutic activities tailored to each individual. “Every patient is different, so it’s all about finding what works best for them and helping them regain confidence and independence,” she adds.
Why St Magnus Stands Out
Sally is proud to be part of a workplace that values excellence and patient-centred care.
“We strive to meet the needs of all patients, no matter their values or interests,” she says. “It’s incredibly rewarding to make a difference every day.”
She also appreciates the supportive environment at St Magnus. “The respect and professional support we receive here is unlike anywhere else I’ve worked. The staff are friendly and always ready to help, which is so important, especially in a forensic hospital.”
For Sally, St Magnus isn’t just a workplace—it’s a place of growth and opportunity.
Finding Joy Beyond Work
When she’s not busy making a difference, Sally enjoys watching movies, gardening, and dancing. Going to church is also a meaningful part of her life, providing her with peace and purpose.
Sally’s leadership and commitment make her a vital part of the St Magnus community. Her work reflects the organisation’s dedication to holistic care and supporting both patients and staff.
