High Support Inpatient Services (HSIS)
Personalised, supportive care if you have severe and enduring mental health conditions needing long-term placement under the Mental Health Act 1983, or behavioural symptoms of dementia. The skills of our outstanding team help to ensure wards are calm and relaxing, with many patients also able to enjoy our lovely gardens.
As one family member told us: “To all the staff involved in looking after my dad, words will never be enough to express how grateful and thankful we are for the care you have given him.”
Another said: “Everybody acts as a team, a real holistic approach … it is also good to hear about the balance between medication and quality of life, so thank you so much.”

Spacious Rooms
All bedrooms at St Magnus are single occupancy with an en-suite bathroom, a relaxing armchair or two and plenty of cupboard space. Your room will be bright, light, spacious and can be personalised with your own bedding and pictures. You will have privacy and dignity, as well as the reassurance that you can keep your personal belongings safe.
The Outdoors
Our enclosed wildlife garden can be enjoyed by all patients following a risk assessment, with a landscaped area, nature trails and plenty of well-kept lawns and trees. We’ve designed it specially so you can wander freely with little intervention from our staff. Smell the flowers, stroll on the lawns and watch birds nesting! The HSIS also has its own large enclosed garden with seating, as well as raised beds for gardening groups.
Ensure your Safety
All bedrooms have special fob access so only you and staff can enter. Staffing levels and skill mix on each ward are planned, implemented and reviewed to keep you safe at all times. All patients have up-to-date risk assessments linked to their care plans. We rarely use rapid tranquilisation and prefer verbal de-escalation skills to manage distress without additional medication.
Exceptional Team
Our staff include consultant psychiatrics, social workers, mental health and general nurses, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, activities coordinators, psychologists and arts and drama therapists. Together they make up the multi-disciplinary team helping you gain health and make progress. We’re like one big family!
Our Wards at the High Support Inpatient Services (HSIS)
Cowdray Ward: Intensive Support
A specialist dementia ward if you have complex presentations and behaviours that challenge. You will have plenty of space and two secure garden areas: one is used for big events such as brass band concerts, and the other has gardening space, seating and a football net.
Petworth Ward: Maximising health with high support
You will be able to maintain and build on your health improvements while you receive a high level of support from members of our multi-disciplinary team.
Goodwood Ward: Maximising health with high support
A safe haven if you have ongoing severe and complex mental disorders, and if you are frailer and more cognitively impaired than patients on Petworth Ward. Our Musical Garden is a delight.
Park House Ward: High support for dementia
A specialist ward with exceptional care and equipment to improve quality of life if you have severe forms of dementia. The secure Musical Garden with musical instruments all around is hugely popular.
