Your Assessment Process
Patients and residents usually come to us after a placement elsewhere has not been as successful as hoped. Your assessment process allows us to gather as much information about you as we can so we can design the right care and treatment to help you.
We consider you as a whole person, not a diagnosis.

ABOUT US
Occupational Therapy is all about helping people live life to the fullest. At St Magnus, our Occupational Therapy (OT) team works with individuals to support their independence, well-being, and participation in everyday activities – from self-care and hobbies to work and social engagement.
Grounded in a person-centred approach, we assess each individual’s abilities, motivations, and needs. Whether it’s supporting recovery, adapting to changes in ability, or finding new ways to engage in meaningful activities, our goal is to promote dignity, independence, and quality of life.
WHAT DO WE DO
Our OT service provides:
- Comprehensive assessments to understand strengths, challenges, and goals.
- Therapeutic interventions – including one-to-one sessions, group activities, and skill-building programmes.
- Practical support – such as equipment provision, environmental adaptations, falls prevention, and sensory support.
- Discharge planning – ensuring smooth transitions from hospital to community life.
We work closely with our multidisciplinary team to create tailored plans that address physical, cognitive, emotional, and social needs. Every step of the journey is guided by evidence-based practice and compassion.
REFERRAL SYSTEM
Referrals to our OT service come from within our professional care team. Once a referral is received, we determine the most suitable pathway based on the reason for referral:
- Criteria A – For ongoing therapeutic support, structured interventions, and long-term rehabilitation.
- Criteria B – For assessments, equipment recommendations, adaptations, and shorter-term interventions.
Each pathway includes a clear process – from initial assessment and goal-setting to regular reviews and final discharge planning – ensuring each person receives the right level of care at the right time.

Every individual is different
We start from the principle that every individual is different and every patient deserves a personalised approach. Our guiding aim is to improve your quality of life, based on a comprehensive and holistic assessment of your mental health, physical health and security needs.
We are proud that some of the leading consultants in both forensic and older-age psychiatry chair our clinical care teams. At St Magnus and St Martha’s we showcase best practice while assessing your condition, managing and treating it, and planning your future care.
“Every behaviour means something; our job is to understand that and offer tailored support.”

Our range of specialist staff includes: psychiatrists (trained in older-age psychiatry, forensic psychiatry and general psychiatry), primary care (GP services) provided by Swan Medical Group, registered mental health and registered general (adult) nurses, associate nurses, support workers/care staff, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapy and activities teams, speech and language therapists, and music, drama, art, physiotherapy and dietary specialists.
Taking care of your surroundings and serving you delicious, nutritious food are just as important, so our team includes housekeepers and chefs.
