What do you get when you mix friendly competition, a commitment to physical wellbeing, and an entire healthcare community with running shoes and a pedometer? You get Let’s Get Physical, our one-week education and activity campaign that brought The St Magnus Community to life with energy, learning, and laughter.
From the 1st to the 5th of April, staff, patients, and departments across St Magnus and St Martha’s took part in a spirited initiative promoting physical health and teamwork. Here’s a look back at what made the week such a resounding success.
🌟 Movement in Miles and Motivation
The week kicked off with energy and enthusiasm across our two sites—St Magnus and St Martha’s. Staff and patients took part in a range of physical challenges, from walking and cycling goals to the Slam Dunk Waste Management Basketball game.
🚶♀️ By Day 2, participants had already walked over 46 miles, beating our initial London Marathon target by a full 20 miles.
🚴♂️ Cycling totals soared to 133 miles, with some participants pushing themselves far beyond what they thought possible.
📱 Pedometers tracked over 496,000 steps at St Magnus alone, with a healthy rivalry between wards fuelling the momentum.
All this movement wasn’t just about numbers; it was about togetherness. Staff and patients walked side by side, challenged each other in the gym, and soaked up spring sunshine on the hospital grounds.
🧠 Learning That Moves You
While the week was bursting with activity, the heart of Education Week remained focused on one core mission: equipping our teams with the knowledge to deliver safe, person-centred care.
Delivered by our fantastic education team, and supported by Dr. Sam and Terry, the sessions turned complex medical knowledge into digestible, actionable learning. Sessions included a range of critical topics such as:
🧠 Day 1: Medication safety – from Clozapine adverse effects to Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
🚨 Day 2: Emergency response protocols – including Sepsis, NEWS2, and Glasgow Coma Scale assessments
🦠 Day 3: Infection prevention and control, including a bit of fun with bacteria-themed photo ops!
🍬 Day 4: Diabetes, the most requested topic from staff surveys, delivered with clarity and impact by our educators and guest speakers
Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many staff expressing appreciation for how accessible and practical the sessions were. As one staff member put it:
🏁 The Relay Showdown: A Race to Remember
The climax of the week? The ultimate 5km relay: Hospital vs. Nursing—a battle of wills, endurance, and sheer team spirit.
With laps around Marley Lane and sprints from reception to the cattle grid, teams gave it everything they had. The result?
🥇 Relay Champions: St Martha’s!
Crowned Oldercare Ultimate Champions and All-Round Best People (yes, we made that official).

💚 Why It Matters
Events like Let’s Get Physical remind us that wellbeing is multifaceted. It’s not just about knowledge, it’s about action, connection, and community. We walked. We learned. We laughed. And most importantly, we did it together.
To our staff, thank you for showing up, in trainers and in spirit. To the families and carers, know that your loved ones are supported by a community that leads with both compassion and momentum. To our commissioners and agency partners—this is the standard we’re proud to uphold. Until next time… keep moving!
