At the start of 2023, Drama Therapist Stephanie McClean and Nursing Director Hattie McHugh began discussing how we might introduce reflective practice to our service across the St Magnus Community. Our staff are experienced in working with the complexities presented by our patients, however, they recognised the lack of space for them to reflect on that experience in a formal way, as is now best practice across the healthcare sector.
With the support of our senior management team, Schwartz Rounds were introduced. This evidenced-based intervention is widely used across healthcare and other settings such as prisons, higher education, and care homes. Initially developed by Ken Schwartz, who had palliative cancer in his 40s, Schwartz Rounds aim to create a supportive and reflective forum. Here, staff of all roles can come together and share their experiences in a confidential space.
We partnered with the Point of Care Foundation, who trained and supported us in introducing Schwartz Rounds here at St Magnus Hospital. In July 2023, we hosted our first round, which was well attended by staff from various departments around the service. The session focused on the introductory theme “The Day I Made a Difference.” Our panel of ‘storytellers’ shared valuable insights and experiences from their professional lives and roles.
This initiative has been a real success and feedback has shown that staff feel more connected to each other, have developed greater self-awareness, and have an improved understanding of how to care for their patients.
“These talks are such a great way to listen, contribute and grow through shared experience with our amazing team. Huge thanks to our facilitators Laxmi & Steph and all the Schwartz Round team.” Jo Randall, CEO The St Magnus Community
Schwartz Round talks are held every second month across the service.
